Michael K. Kivinen, M.A., L.L.P., C.Ht. holds a Master’s degree in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University. He is also a certified hypnotherapist and a member of the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association®. His previous professional experience includes vocational counseling, addiction treatment, and 13 years as a social worker with adults affected by serious and persistent mental illnesses. Since 1998 he has conducted hundreds of psychological evaluations under the supervision of West Brook’s clinical director and is enthusiastically continuing that working relationship here. In treating addiction he emphasizes motivational aspects, pattern recognition, internal conflict resolution, and emotion regulation. His other areas of therapeutic emphasis include posttraumatic stress and other co-occurring disorders; grief and loss; dreams and imagination; and stress and anxiety management. He views hypnosis as a powerful, holistic complement to addiction treatment that helps patients bypass self-imposed limitations and gain access to their internal resources for creativity, growth, and change.
